RC Operating by Long Range Wi-Fi
If fully autonomous sailing is not allowed by authorities, or if positioning is not precise enough, for instance monitoring reef restoration objects, there is a remote controlled Snorkelbot version. This, by Long range Wi-Fi from an escorting vessel in deeper water, outside the reef.
The operator works from a laptop, and if needed, a directional antenna needs to be pointed in the direction of the working Snorkelbot.
A second or third stabilized camera streams low resolution video to operator’s laptop. By use of a dashboard on the screen, Snorkelbot can be maneuvered as a drone, and orders can be given to start recording with the HD cameras.
After such a session, the USV can go back to autonomous mode, and possibly sail to a next reef or to the escorting vessel for a hook-up.
This system is a huge cost saving alternative for snorkeling sessions by research crew. It operates as a vector controllable surface drone, solar powered for unlimited range.
The system is based on local-IoT, and developed up to prototyping. As hardware options in Wi-Fi/drone telecommunication are always evolving, best system is to be chosen before a build.
