Safety and Regulatory Features
Depending on the country of operating, measures can be taken to fulfill regulatory requirements, regarding the use of autonomous sailing unmanned vessels.
The base Snorkelbot version includes a flagpole for visibility, and the possibility to break into the navigation system by a short-range 2.4GHz Radio Transmitter Controller. With this, if needed during mission legs with substantial traffic around, Snorkelbot can be stopped or steered away by a safety operator from an escorting dinghy or boat.
Because nowadays most of the world coasts are well lined up with 3G/4G cell towers for mobile reception many kilometers in sea, Snorkelbot offers the possibility of a 360 degree camera system on deck, which transmits with intervals the view around to your HQ. From there, the USV can be stopped or steered off course.
Located on top of the camera housing for this, is a strong blinking LED, for vehicle visibility at night.
In case Snorkelbot needs human control, further away than possible with cell-towers, a similar system based on long range Wi-Fi can be implemented.
An escorting boat might be needed for this, but there will be no need to stay close by. Safety operation cost can be minimalized by strategically anchoring near mission operating area.
